Newsletter | October 2025
Welcome to our second newsletter of the year for the October month! We hope everyone has settled into the semester and found their place within the society, it’s been great getting to know everyone. It has been a very busy month with both projects into full swing, various workshops, new merch, BBC interviews and of course many socials. Read on to find out more and see what we have planned for the November month.

EVENTS
The society was fortunate enough to be featured on a piece by the BBC about the growing space industry in Scotland focusing on the opportunities Strathclyde University offers students, find our more here and read the rest of the article (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3epzvp3nxzo)!
We were also invited to attend the Strathclyde Annual Engineering Gala Dinner and the Annual IMechE Dinner where we were able to speak to and connect with various members of industry.
We hope everyone enjoyed the socials over the past month. Whether it was nearly beating USM at the joint society quiz night, Women in STEM social with USM and GU Rocketry, a spooky games night with our friends from GU Orbit or exploring the streets between subways stops on our “Do You Wear Wigs?” Halloween Subcrawl social. It’s been a perfect opportunity to take a break and meet different members.
Look out for our next big social soon!
Our media and branding team worked hard on some new designs which will feature on our new merch. It will be great to see everyone showing some team spirit in their new kit once it arrives, at that point we will also get a big group photo with everyone.
ROCKETRY
Our Rocketry team are now halfway into the design phase of the rocket. Thank you to all the members who are putting in the hard work to bring the project to life, and to the various team leads for organising meetings each week and keeping everyone on track.
We hope to see everyone at the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) on the 12th of November, this is a great opportunity to present your work with the rest of the team and ask questions to other sub-teams regarding designs.
Continuing from last month, we held various workshops to help new members learn the software used within the team. This started with RASAero which helps simulate realistic flight parameters at supersonic speeds, followed by a CAD workshop using Onshape which allows models to be worked on simultaneously.
There was also a joint PCB workshop with STRATHcube allowing members to get a basic understanding of printed circuit boards.
Our rocketry team have officially submitted their application for IREC 2026 to compete in the 30,000ft category with a rocket names Nevis, we will be finding out if our spot is secured in the next few weeks.
STRATHcube
Our STRATHcube team have been very busy further designing the 2U CubeSat and researching the many challenges that come with satellite design.
There will be site visit to Alba Orbital on the 5th of November where you will be able to see some of their satellites preparing for launch and speak to industry professionals! As well as un upcoming check point with ESA in mid-November to review our progress on the Fly Your Satellite! Design Booster Program.
The 1U CubeSat workshop has been progressing on and seen great success from it’s goal of educating new members on satellite design and procedures.
This has involved designing the structure on SolidWorks, developing the electrical and software stages and an introduction to Arduino’s workshop. Manufacturing will be starting soon, we hope to see everyone returning!
Dates to keep an eye out for in October:
Alba Orbital Site Visit | (5/11)
FYS! Update | (12/11)
